MessageSujet: 2nd Rangers-Weymouth, England-June 1st, 1944   2nd Rangers-Weymouth, England-June 1st, 1944 EmptyMar 5 Aoû 2008 - 23:40

This Ranger is enjoying a cup of coffee and a doughnut, handed out by the Red Cross, before boarding a British transport, where he'll spend the next 5 days, unable to disembark for security reasons, before going ashore at Dog White, Omaha Beach at 7:40 am, with the rest of Force C...
He's wearing the ill-fated Assault jacket (this one in dark green-OD 7-manufactured by the Harlan Stitiching Company)-most Rangers actually favored the M-1928 haversack...
He also wears the orange diamond on the back of his hemet; the 2nd and 5th Rangers painted these to, presumably, help soldiers follw one an another in the dark...
Even though Corcorran boots were, supposedly, issued to the Rangers, most photos of Rangers on D-Day show them wearing standard boots and leggings...apparently, the soldiers wanted to save their corcorrans for 'dress' purposes..
Once again,
Thanks for looking,
Bruce

Good question!
in response...
painted 'camo' (camoflage) on US helmets wasn't a 'standard' procedure in the ETO...even w/US paratroopers (apparently, some troopers of the 82nd in Normandy continued a practice started in the Mediterranean theatre)...
...but there are a number of photos of US troops in Normandy wearing painted camoflage helmets to prove that it did happen from time to time...
Here are a couple:

pic taken from a group of shots of troopers of the 41st Armored inf., 2nd Armored division, moving through a town in Normandy (notice the trooper on the left).

This pic of US Rangers, taken at the embarkation point in Weymouth on June 1st, was the inspiration for this bash...notice the officer on the right...
( even MORE interesting, although off the subject, is the trooper in the background with a VERY non-standard large-mesh netting on his helmet-this netting seems to be more of a German large mesh than anything else...)

...still, the practice of painting camo on US helmets in the ETO was 'relatively' rare...and, although I don't, generally, like to bash 'one-off' figures (I prefer to bash figures that are 'representative' of the type of unit of soldier from a particular era or campaign), I wanted to make use of the excellent camo painted helmet that comes with the DiD 'Steiner' figure...
Thanks,
Bruce

Pas oublier que pour les paras le camo était fait avec de la peinture pour détection de gazs.
